In the Nordics, the new mobility sector has grown rapidly in recent years. Key trends include autonomous driving, connectivity, electrification of vehicles, and automation of production and individual services. And these trends are about to change how we move, share and use the traffic infrastructure.

Although the spectrum of business in new mobility is growing, the pace of the change indicates that it is now more important than ever for sector players to stay ahead of the game.

Nordic Forerunners

The Nordics have proven to be well-positioned within the new mobility industry. As a result of the size of their markets, liberal regulation and culture of innovation. Furthermore, the Nordics have been well equipped to take on a leading role and shift their transport system. This is due to the legislative environment in these countries around key trends of mobility.

Climate Goals as Drivers of Change

Tackling climate change has become a top priority for EU institutions across a range of policies, including transport. The expected the focus, among other things, is going to be on sustainability issues around European urban mobility. And this will include the transport alternatives offered by new mobility devices such as e-scooters and e-bikes.

Cities are increasingly interested in investing in intelligent transportation infrastructure. In the Nordics, for instance, Helsinki has committed to significantly limit its greenhouse emissions and aims to become the world’s most functional city. By 2035, the city also aims to be totally carbon neutral. To reach this goal, the Finnish capital will launch several initiatives. One of which is to increase the proportion of electric cars and buses as well as rail transport.
