According to the ScaleUp Institute's 2020 annual report, scale-ups remain the most innovative and international of UK SMEs. They contributed £1trillion to the UK economy in 2018 - accounting for 50% of the total contribution by all UK SMEs.

The report calculated there to be 33,860 scale-ups across all industries in the UK. That's companies growing their employment numbers and/or turnover by more than 20% a year over a period of three years, with at least 10 employees at the start of the period.
